An astronomy story has a much better chance of being published in the popular press or if it has a strong picture, is free from jargon and reports exciting science. Bear in mind that few editors and journalist know much about science -- you have to make them want to know about it. It you want it to get your story on TV, you need a young, enthusiastic, interview-savvy talking head available for interview. Your press release must have 24-hour contact details either for the potential interviewee or the media manager for the story. The same basic ideas - the story in the first paragraph and strong illustrations - are central to on-line newsletters and blogs.
