Name: Dr. Barrie Barnard

 

Dr S v R Barnard (Barrie) has a D Ed degree in Mathematics Education, thirty-two years teaching experience as mathematics teacher, nineteen years as head of a mathematics department and seven years as deputy principal. He also has ten years’ experience as provincial examiner and served as a panel member setting the national examination for grade 12 mathematics for five years. He has fourteen years’ experience as AIMSSEC Academic Manager designing course material and organising training courses for in-service mathematics teachers. 

He has made meaningful contributions to the improvement of mathematics education through various presentations at local teacher centres and at congresses, conferences both internationally and nationally. His professional mission in life is to alleviate the shortage of skilled mathematics teachers in South Africa and Africa.

AIMSSEC is the Schools Enrichment Centre of AIMS South Africa (the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences) established in 2003 in Muizenberg, South Africa.

In 2012 AIMSSEC won the UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Outstanding Practice and Performance in Enhancing the Effectiveness of Teachers in Developing Countries.
