I am a teacher by profession, since 1987 and love working with the learners / students. I have taught at high schools and was also a lecturer at a college of Education responsible for primary and high school Teacher Training in Natural Sciences and Biology. My passion includes doing hands-on practical work activities, field work activities and application of real-life context to enhance the content taught at classroom level. I believe this will excite the learners and guide them to interpret, make meaning and to understand concepts. This is about instilling lifelong lessons they will treasure and will never forget.
During my teaching career, I was a co-author of Natural Sciences Grades 4-9 and Biology (now called Life Sciences) Grades 10-12 textbooks. I was also a Biology Examiner for several years. However, my favourite subject is Chemistry which was one of my majors at university.
Currently I am employed as a Senior Curriculum Planner for Natural Sciences by the Western Cape Education Department. I have been in this position since 2009. I was previously a Biology (Life Sciences) and Natural Sciences Subject Advisor. I enjoy working with Natural Sciences Subject Advisers. I continue to expose them to new technologies that are aligned to the classroom and can be used to expose the learners to the 21st century and 4IR skills. I am an advocate of the Inquiry Based Science Learning (IBSL) and ‘Doing Science’ implementing the scientific method. In addition, I advocate that learner’s participation in science clubs and competitions such as Expo, Olympiads, AstroQuiz, debates, science shows, etc. to nurture and identify their talent. I mentor and judge these competitions during my spare time. I always instill passion and encourage learners to choose science careers.
I love nature and like travelling while exploring breath-taking scenery across the world. Always have time to work on a mini garden. My vision is to improve healthy living and ensuring that we are a community that addresses the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
