A project aimed at identifying and nurturing science, engineering and technology talent among top-performing grade 10 learners, has now been extended to Nkowankowa in Limpopo. The launch of Nurturing SET talent (NSET) in this province took place on 16 July to the cheers of some 160 learners.
The objectives of NSET are to:
- Improve learner participation and performance in mathematics, physical science
and life science. - Expose learners to career opportunities in SET.
- Give learners an opportunity to interact with appropriate role models in SET.
- Assist mathematics, physical science, life science and life orientation educators’ development on content and methodology.
This project was initiated in 2009 as a three-year intervention, starting with 20 top maths, physical science and life science grade 10 students per school. They will be part of the project until they pass grade 12 at the end of the 2012 academic year.
The programme provides learning and teaching support material, extra tuition and workshops for educators to help them with the more challenging maths, physical science, life science and life orientation content. Learners are also exposed to appropriate role models in the SET fields.
In 2009, 10 schools in and around Pretoria were identified and the project was officially launched during May this year.
Altogether, this intervention will target 450 top learners and 80 educators in 24 schools from Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces.
