Selomina Phekelela | An unforgettable journey—experiencing BRICS in Russia

My first international trip was quite the adventure!

After a whirlwind of three flights, I made it to Moscow, relieved not to have gotten lost in the airport shuffle.

I encountered a friendly gentleman, presumably a sim card vendor, who caught my attention with his warm greeting.

As I revealed my SA identity, he responded with a cheerful, “Oh, South Africa, our friends!” His friendly demeanor was an unexpected but welcomed start to my journey to the BRICS Forum, setting the tone for what would be an exciting adventure.

Nestled in the picturesque city of Sochi, the 9th BRICS Young Scientist Forum (YSF) kicked off under Russia’s leadership, showcasing the collective ingenuity and innovation of young scientists and innovators from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and other new members.

And oh boy, did I come back with a story that would make any journalist’s heart sing!

During the forum, I had the privilege of meeting Mfanelo Ndlela – and what an encounter that was!

Ndlela, the 32-year-old mastermind behind Electri-Coal Technologies, was not only commended at the forum for his Smart Water System solution, but also went on to win third place in the Grassroots Innovation Awards, for Innovator in The Market Generating Significant Revenue shortly after landing back in SA.

And then Ndlela hits me with yet another update! After supplying Dr Oetker Pizza with 90,000 liters of water, this energetic innovator headed straight for Botswana to collaborate on water crisis solutions for the country.

And just when I thought, I was out of the woods with this fast-paced story, Ndlela had more updates to share!

“Innovation is about solving challenges and creating opportunities for the future,”‘ said Ndlela.

If I divulge any more information, it could ruin the surprise before my article is even published.

To offer a hint, my editor believes Ndlela could be the savior Johannesburg needs for its water crisis.

Amidst the flurry of conversations, one central issue captured my attention at the forum—the potential for international collaboration in climate solutions.

I witnessed scientists from diverse nations brainstorming solutions to global challenges like water scarcity, agriculture, and artificial intelligence in addressing some of these issues.

A toast to the unforgettable

My trip was nothing short of awe-inspiring, from the luxurious accommodations at the Mantera Resort and Congress Hotel—with its breathtaking view of Lego (Mzymta) Beach—to the chill in the air that constantly reminded me of the snow!

Of course, my visit to the Sirius Educational Center was the cherry on top.

With its advanced science facilities and programmes, it’s hard not to be inspired by the talent and potential of the high school learners in Russia.

And while mingling with the brilliant scientists in Russia, the stars aligned, and I was graced with my second award—the prestigious Kudu Award for Media Contribution to Conservation by the South African National Parks!

Just a month after winning the National Heritage Council of South Africa’s Golden Shield Heritage Award for Heritage Journalism.

I’m still reeling with gratitude for the love and recognition from my own country.

I have always been passionate about reporting solutions that safeguard both our ecosystems and traditional roles, reminding us that we are all part of this planet and share the same oxygen.

In less than a year, in the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement Science Journalism Programme, my devotion to journalism and my writing skills have been acknowledged.

To the DSTI, I owe a debt of gratitude for making this trip a reality.

You covered every detail, ensuring a seamless experience, and were always there to address any queries.

To the SAASTA team, Martha Mokgoko and Zamuxolo Matiwana, my gratitude knows no bounds.

I raise a virtual toast to all those who have supported me and to the many more accolades yet to come, whether from home or afar!
