The Kingdom of Eswatini marked a significant milestone in its scientific development by hosting its first-ever National Science Week (ENSW). The event was officially launched on February 13, 2025, at the UNESWA Sports Emporium in Kwaluseni, bringing together key stakeholders from Eswatini and South Africa’s Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI).

This groundbreaking initiative was made possible through a strategic partnership between Eswatini’s Department of Research, Science, Technology, and Innovation under the Ministry of Information, Communication, and Technology (MICT) and South Africa’s DSTI. The collaboration underscores the commitment of both nations to strengthen Eswatini’s National System of Innovation (NSI) and enhance regional cooperation in Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI).

A Regional Effort for Science Advancement

A key highlight of the celebration was the ENSW Focus Week, which ran from February 17–20, 2025, across all four regions of Eswatini—Manzini, Lubombo, Hhohho, and Shiselweni. The event provided an interactive platform for learners, educators, and the general public to engage with cutting-edge scientific developments and hands-on exhibitions.

At the request of DSTI, the National Research Foundation – South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (NRF-SAASTA) participated as an exhibitor and extended invitations to its partner organizations. The South African delegation included:

  • National Research Foundation – South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (NRF-SAASTA)
  • South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON)
  • South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO)
  • Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)
  • South African National Space Agency (SANSA)
  • Penreach Shalamula STEAM Science Centre

Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists

The ENSW Focus Week successfully engaged approximately 200 learners and members of the public each day, offering a glimpse into the vast opportunities within the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Visitors interacted with various exhibits, deepening their understanding of scientific principles and real-world applications.

Educators, who accompanied learners to the exhibitions, found the content particularly valuable, aligning with their classroom curricula. Many expressed keen interest in forging partnerships with NRF facilities and research institutions, recognizing the potential for long-term collaboration to enhance STEM education in Eswatini.

Key Outcomes & Reflections

The impact of the inaugural National Science Week was profound, leaving a lasting impression on both learners and educators. The interactive exhibits sparked curiosity and excitement among students, drawing them into deeper inquiry about scientific concepts. As they engaged with the displays and demonstrations, many posed insightful questions, revealing a growing enthusiasm for STEM fields and a desire to understand the world through science.

For educators, the experience was equally enriching. They found the content presented at the exhibitions highly relevant to their curricula, providing a bridge between classroom theory and real-world applications. Many expressed a keen interest in maintaining ongoing collaboration with scientific institutions, recognizing the value of incorporating practical STEM experiences into their teaching methodologies.

Beyond the immediate learning opportunities, the event also laid the foundation for future partnerships. Some educators took the initiative to establish connections with NRF facilities and business units, seeking to integrate new scientific resources into their schools. These emerging networks hold the potential to enhance STEM education by introducing mentorship programs, learning materials, and greater engagement between students and the scientific community. The enthusiasm and collaboration witnessed during the week underscored the event’s success in fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and innovation within Eswatini.

A Step Forward for Science in Eswatini

The launch of Eswatini’s National Science Week represents a significant step in fostering scientific literacy, innovation, and cross-border collaboration. By bringing science closer to communities, the initiative not only raises awareness but also inspires future generations to pursue careers in STEM.

As Eswatini continues to build its scientific ecosystem, partnerships like these will be crucial in bridging knowledge gaps, driving technological advancements, and positioning the region as a hub for scientific excellence. The success of this inaugural event sets the stage for even greater collaborations in the years to come.
