Empowering Future Environmental Scientists: WESSA uMngeni Valley Education Centre Receives Exhibit Donation and Accreditation from NRF-SAASTA

The NRF-SAASTA Managing Director, Dr. Mamoeletsi Mosia, recently handed over a collection of exhibits donated to the WESSA uMngeni Valley Education Centre in Howick. Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (WESSA), is dedicated to initiating and supporting impactful environmental and conservation projects. These initiatives aim to foster greater public participation in caring for the Earth. Located in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, the center has become a beacon for environmental education and community involvement. In 2022, the center earned accreditation through a rigorous process managed and coordinated by NRF-SAASTA, cementing its status as a key player within the South African Network of Science Centres. Dr Mosia also took the opportunity to officially hand over the Accreditation Certificate of the centre.

During the handover ceremony, Dr. Mosia appreciated the partnership that the DSI, through NRF-SAASTA has with the Network of Science Centres. She highlighted that through this partnership, we are able to work together in cultivating a love for and appreciation of science among learners, students and the community at large. These exhibits are expected to enhance the learning experience at the center, making science more accessible and engaging. The donation of exhibits to WESSA uMngeni Valley Education Centre demonstrates the commitment of DSI and NRF-SAASTA in capacitating the science centre community.  

The event was graced by the presence of notable figures, including Cindy-Lee Cloete, the CEO of WESSA, and Sandile Mnikathi, the Deputy Mayor of Howick. Their attendance underscored the significance of the collaboration between local government, environmental organizations, and the scientific community. This partnership aims to strengthen the community’s commitment to environmental education and sustainable practices. The presence of these leaders also highlighted the support and recognition from various sectors, ensuring the center’s initiatives receive the necessary backing to succeed.
