The University of South Africa (UNISA) hosted the Department of Science and Technology Education Connect Conference (DeSTE Connect) in September, focusing on an in-depth exploration of the latest trends and innovations in science and technology education. The conference gathered scientists, researchers, and academics from both South African and international universities, fostering knowledge exchange and a shared dedication to shaping the future of education in response to global challenges and opportunities in the fields of science and technology. This year, the event took place at the Mopani Rest Camp in Kruger National Park, with Mr. James Tlhabane representing NRF-SAASTA.

Mr. Tlhabane presented a paper titled “Leveraging Technology Tools to Enhance the Teaching and Learning of Physical Science in South Africa.” His research emphasized the use of technology tools that do not require internet data, aiming to improve the teaching and learning of Physical Science in rural communities. He highlighted the importance of maintaining continuous education during crises, such as pandemics, when students might be learning from home instead of at school. This focus is particularly relevant for supporting learners and teachers during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic. The conference offered valuable insights into how under-resourced communities could benefit from the research findings shared by various presenters.

The final day of the conference featured a game drive and a bush braai, guided by experienced tour guides through the park, where participants had the chance to see three of the Big Five: lions, elephants, and buffaloes. The conference was a unique experience, providing a valuable opportunity for learning and networking, and left participants with lasting memories.
