Frequently Asked Questions - National Youth Service (NYS)
Applicants must be:
(i) South African citizen
(ii) 35 years old or younger Unemployed
(iii) Have the relevant qualification, as follows:
For Science, Technology, Mathematics and Innovation (STEMI) Graduates:
At minimum, you must have a national diploma or higher qualification in STEMI.
OR,
For Journalism Graduates:
At minimum, you must have a national diploma or higher qualification in Journalism or related fields.
The objectives of the NYS programme are to enhance community service, learning and personal development and opportunities for other career paths.
Participants get opportunities to do on-job-training and are skilled to become future employees
The programme is 12 months.
No, you can only stay a maximum of 12 months in the programme.
Yes, this depends on your highest qualification. A stipend will be paid per month as follows: National Diploma NQF Level 6 (R 4 500), Bachelor’s Degree / B.Tech NQF Level 7 (R 5 000), Honours NQF Level 8 (R 5 500), Master’s NQF Level 9 (R 6 500), PhD NQF Level 10 (R 7 700).
Yes, you may apply if you are 35 years old or younger.
If you have multiple qualifications, upload a copy of your highest qualification within Science, Technology, Mathematics and Innovation (STEMI) /Journalism.
Yes, you may still apply if you have completed the requirements of your qualification. You may upload a copy of your academic record AND a letter from your institution confirming that you have met the requirements of your qualification. Make sure you scan both the academic record and confirmation letter into one file so that you can upload them together.
This letter must give a summary of your background, skills (including your soft skills) and state the reason you would like to be considered for the NYS programme. The letter must be a maximum of 1 page.
The province where you originally come from.
This is the province where you would prefer to be placed during the NYS programme. Where candidates are placed depends on the number of spaces available in that province and there is no guarantee that you will be placed in your preferred province should you be accepted into the programme.
The alternative contact person is someone we will contact if we are unable to reach you using the contact details you provided. This person must ideally be someone you have regular contact with and is able to reach you should we be unable to.
No, you would not be able to re-submit your application should you withdraw it. You would have to wait for the next NYS call to apply again. Withdrawing your application is not reversible, so please make sure that you only do that if you no longer want to be considered in the current call of the NYS programme.

Yes, the copies of your highest qualification, ID and matric certificate that you upload must all be certified.
