Title: South Africa’s readiness for the hydrogen society from a regulations, standards and certification perspective
Laurens is an experienced Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) expert, with a background in electronic engineering. He has a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Pretoria. Laurens has served in various leadership positions at the CSIR, culminating in his appointment as CSIR Group Executive Operations in 2014. Since 2018, he has been a senior consultant with RebelGroup, where he focuses on technology, policy, and economics in the energy, hydrogen, digital, and pharmaceutical sectors. His current focus is on green hydrogen, including regulations, codes, standards (RCS), green certification, and economic impact analysis. He has worked on projects for organizations like the IDC, GIZ, EU, and African Union, and has benchmarked South Africa’s hydrogen RCS against global best practice.
