Curing the crisis
Three programmes from SAASTA’s Science Communication Unit recently participated in the Annual Sustainability Energy Seminar, helping key energy stakeholders to find solutions for South Africa’s energy crisis.
The second annual Sustainable Energy Seminar was held at the Emperors Palace in Johannesburg in October last year. The event brought together some of the country’s key energy stakeholders who play meaningful roles in initiating energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, and developing policy for specifying and manufacturing the products and technologies that change the way energy in South Africa is managed.
The seminar was opened by the Director General of the Department of Energy, Nelly Magubane.
Three programmes from SAASTA’s Science Communication Unit – the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (HySA), the Public Understanding of Biotechnology (PUB), and the Nanotechnology Public Engagement Programme (NPEP) – participated in the one-day seminar. All three programmes have ties to the energy industry, specifically energy storage through nanostructured materials; biofuels (through biotechnology), hydrogen and fuel cell technologies; and addressing electricity shortages.
The seminar was a great platform for the programmes to engage and discuss crucial energy related issues, while sharing programme objectives and ideas.
