SAASTA Executive Director, Beverley Damonse, has been appointed as the Group Executive: Science Advancement at the National Research Foundation (NRF). Effective since 1 November 2011, this is a new position in the NRF as a result of the restructuring of its corporate structure.
As Science Advancement Group Executive, Damonse’s new position will see her playing a leading role in defining the direction, scope, and the conceptualisation of science advancement policy in the NRF. She will report to the NRF CEO, serve on the NRF Corporate Executive committee, and will continue to be responsible for SAASTA within the increased scope of her tasks.
Damonse has recently completed her doctoral degree and will be graduating at the University of Pretoria’s April graduation ceremony. The title of her thesis is “Leadership through the lens of research productivity” and deals with the role of research leadership in stimulating research productivity in educational research.
Before joining SAASTA as Executive Director in 2003, Damonse managed the NRF’s Education and Challenges for Change focus area. She previously studied at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg, where she completed a BSc degree in microbiology and plant pathology. Damonse later obtained a Master of Education degree focusing on curriculum development and science education, graduating cum laude.
