Biotechnology sparkles at KZN Science Centre

Learners try their hand at DNA extraction.
The KwaZulu-Natal Science Centre was proud to play host to over 2000 learners and 80 educators for the Public Understanding of Biotechnology (PUB) programme's 2012 learner workshop initiative.

Learners from 39 underprivileged schools within KwaZulu-Natal were treated to an exciting programme based on the science of Biotechnology - what it is and what it has to offer.

The biotechnology-related activities were varied and included role-modelling presentations by representatives from the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), Durban Institute of Technology as well as the DNA Project.

The workshops provided learners with hands-on experience. The would-be scientists conducted DNA extractions and learnt more about how Futhi the calf was cloned. They thoroughly enjoyed the programme and gained a great deal from the experience. Some walked away with a new outlook on Life Sciences as a subject, while others learnt more about the use of DNA in forensics and the science behind crime scene investigations.

What the learners had to say:

Thombeka Nyawe of Okumhlophe High School: "The workshop was very informative and I did learn a lot, considering that I'm not a Biology student. I didn't know Biology was so interesting!"

Jyothi Chandra of Ganges Secondary: "Excellent workshop, very educational and really fun! I love the science centre!"
